According to Blum-Kulka’s famous "Explicitation Hypothesis" brought up in 1986, the redundancy of translation is revealed by the cohesive explicitness and conjunction translation, which has been considered as an aspect very much worth studying in the research of explicitation and implicitation. Based on the researches of explicitation and implicitation, we can find that most of the researches on explicitation of conjunction translation are limited to the comparison between one translated text and the original text. Some scholars have later made a proposal on the feasibility of comparing the original text with two or more translations at the same time, from which the research data and outcome may be the solid evidence for the existence of explicitation and implicitation. On account of a literature review on relevant studies, this thesis studies two different translations from different translators of the same original text to probe explicitation and implicitation in legal translation in the perspective of conjunctions, which are the translation of Foreign Trade Law of People’s Republic of China published by China Legal Publishing House in April 2001 and the translation published on the official website of Ministry of Commerce People’s Republic of China, as well as the original version of Foreign Trade Law of People s Republic of China in Chinese. Through the approach of contrastive analysis, a more specific analysis is going to be achieved. The prediction is made that explicitation and implicitation as the universals of translation do exist in the field of conjunction translation in legal documents if different translations of the same original text have the same tendency of explicitation and implicitation.Being consistent with the research questions brought up in the first chapter, the research will be mainly divided into two aspects:comparison made between original texts and translations, and comparison between two English translations. The first comparison is to reveal the redundancy of the conjunction translation. And the second comparison is made between the two translated texts. It means to echo the Explicitation Hypothesis and make the verification more comprehensive and specific. Moreover, this comparison also presents the different frequencies of the conjunctions in two translations, which gives a thought that the result of language transfer is also decided by the translation competence of the translators. In chapter five, a detailed study of explicitation and implicitation of conjunction translation in two versions of translated Foreign Trade Law of the People’s Republic of China based on the data analysis, which presents specific examples of semantic and syntactic explicitation as well as implicitation. It is hoped that this research may offer some useful insights into the translation of conjunctions in legal documents and little contribution made to the study of explicitation and implicitation.
