This report is based on the author’s practice of translating the Chinese novel Ye Cao Huang Yuan. The first three chapters of the novel are selected as the corpus of this report. In this report, the author at first introduces the background of translation project, the source text, the client’s requirements as well as the translation strategies and methods, and then specifies the process of project practice. Next, the author lists main translation problems she encountered, including translation of the novel’s title, characters’ names, sentences, culture-loaded words and idioms. Concerning the translation of sentences, the main problems the author encountered include translation of paratactic sentences and subjectless sentences, conversion of voice as well as word order. Then, the author puts forward specific solutions to the above-listed four translation problems, as follows:(1) an English noun or phrase which can directly reflect a Chinese novel’s content or theme can be selected as the English title of the Chinese novel;(2) characters’ names in Chinese novels can be translated by using English common nouns which can convey their implied meanings;(3) Chinese sentences should be translated by using various translation methods according to English syntactic features;(4) for spreading Chinese culture to the outside world, Chinese culture-loaded words can be translated by adopting literal translation plus annotation and transliteration plus annotation, and Chinese idioms can be translated by adopting literal translation and literal translation plus annotation.
