A Reflection On Causes Of Incoherence In Chinese-english Slmultaneous Interpreting

Coherence is one of t he most important criteria in term s of conference interpreting quality as sessment. Many resea rches have explored som e similar questions such as what interpreters can do to make their renditions understandable to audience. Given that different language pairs and directionality would answer such questions in a different manner, this thesis attempts to discuss the coherence issues in Chinese to English s imultaneous interpreting with a cas e in which the autho r serves as the interpreter.The transcriptions of the interpreter and the Chinese speech are compared and analyzed. A revised perform ance based on the original rendition is taped. By comparing the tran scripts and the results of the interview, the thesis finds that omissions and obscure pronouns w ould have adverse effects on coherence. Further, reasons which lead to their occurrence are analyzed. In addition, the thesis finds that disfluency and inappropriat e pronunciation would also hamper the coherence of rendition as identified by the participants.
