Study On Boats Image In Tang Poems

Image study is one of the hotspots in the research of poetry. This thesis will focus on analyzing the poetic image of boats, based on the studies of Tang poems. During the Sui and Tang dynasties, boats have played a key role in the operation of the whole social economy, since the opening and navigation of the Jing-Hang Grand Canal; in addition, the accumulation of boats culture and poetry art, has laid the foundation of the development of Tang poems’ boats image. Accordingly, the author attempts to analyze boats as poetic image in Tang poems, in order to explore the social content of the Tang Dynasty, the thoughts and feelings of poets, and the artistic qualities of poems, reflected by the boats image.This thesis studies Tang poems’ boats image from the following six aspects:The introduction has three sections: the reasons of choosing this topic, literature review, and the main research contents and methods. Tang poems’ boats image has a wide space to explore, and in-depth study of the subject can play a small role in promoting study of Tang poems; the literature review presents a comprehensive review of the research; as for research methods, relevant principles and methods of literature, interdisciplinary and close reading are adopted.Chapter one is divided into two sections. The first section, analyzes the significant role that boats have played in the social life in the Tang Dynasty, from the perspective of “comprehensive discussion: boats’ important position in the social life of the Tang Dynasty” as well as the perspective of “special discussion: boats in the life of the literati of Tang Dynasty”, which made an introduction to the following research. Section two, makes an overview of the studies regarding the boats image in the past dynasties’ poems before Song, highlighting the richness and high quality of Tang poems’ boats image.Chapter two, by boats’ function level, find Tang poems’ boats image widely involved travelling, dragon-boat racing, fishing, touring, goods trade, war and other scenes of life. According to correlated quantitative traits, combined with characteristics of these scenes’, Tang poems’ boats image can be divided into three parts: travelling, amusing, solicitude for home and the country. This chapter dedicated to the integration of Tang poems’ boats image that can be linked to the social contents and poets’ affection outpours in those social contents.Chapter Three is also divided into three parts, inquiring into Tang poems’ boats image in a more in-depth way, from the perspective of imagery. Section one analyzes the boats image’s meaning of making contribution to people and the country, from the association of boats’ transportation function in water with people’s going into politics for the whole country as an entry point. Section two concludes Tang poems’ boats image’s characteristics in the expressing of the meditation of the ancient and sentimentality of relatives and friends’ death, paying attention to the relationship between boats image and past time. Section three established in three levels, Fan Li-Zhou, Diao-Chuan and Xu-Zhou, investigates three aspects of Tang literati’s thought of reclusion in the perspective of Tang poems’ boats image: the reclusion type of retiring after achieving success, the type of casual and elegant reclusion, the type of self-adaption and leisurely reclusion.Chapter four makes an attempt to focus on Tang poems’ boats image itself, from the perspective of artistic aesthetics, mainly including the discussion of “Boats displacement: distance produces beauty”, “Space place: soul field”, “Chanting things”, “Painting poems and poetic painting”. This chapter is divided into two parts: “Space aesthetics of boats”, “Giving some examples in the grand and thorough background: centering at Tang poems, case in depth of boats image”.Conclusion : the author summarizes the four chapters; personal reflections on writing the thesis: the end of this thesis’ body part.The combination of water and boats, makes boats become the “backyard” of human’s material production and spiritual development. There are lots of classic usages about boats image, such as zaizhou fuzhou, zhouji jichuan, diaoting yuchuan, jiufang qingnao, gufan kezhao, jinlan yaqiang, pianzhou daichuan, cangzhou zhanjian…… Faced with the richness and high quality of Tang poems’ boats image, it strikes me that I’m so humble in this universe, like a drop in the ocean. There is no royal road to the learning, and a lot of efforts are needed for fulfilling the task, just as sail against the current, so I study hard. Although I write this thesis industriously, omissions are inevitable, I will plead with the experts and scholars to offer suggestions.
