In the modern society, mass media has influenced every aspect of people’s daily life, in particular economy, policy and culture. As mushrooming powers in mass media, Film and TV have become an essential tool in terms of propaganda and influence. They are a mirror reflecting the development and revolution of the society. Moreover, they are a 3D history book, by means of which people can search for traces of human civilization and spread new cultural spirit. As a vital part of the mass media, Film and TV undertake an important mission.With the enhancement of people’s living standard, they place more importance on spirit world and cultural propaganda. Therefore, the number of research documents and essays on female image in the media has gone up, covering more and more. As a bachelor on English major and to-be-graduate on Drama and Film Studies, the author has the edge to compare the evolution of female image in media between America and China from a professional prospective. Equipped with systematic knowledge of Chinese and American cultures, the author pays attention to the tendency of feminist development. From the multicultural and feminist prospective, the author speculates on the development of female images in two cultures and analysizes their similarities and differences according to two typical films.The thesis begins with the history of feminism, summarizes the characteristic types of female images in the media in chronological order among two countries, makes every endeavor to discover common features on feminist consciousness and different laws of changing on characters, and discusses diverse factors that have effects on female values and ideology under the circumstances of different political systems, cultures and ideologies. By means of comparison of ideology and culture between two countries, it finds its way to differences of female images in the media in order to give people insights into laws and significance of female image revolution in different times. It also contributes to professional people’s prediction, communication and analysis of prospective female images in the field of media, helps them create mature female images and puts forward to suggestions and propositions in the development of female films in China and in the West.
