The Yellow River has always been difficult to control in the historical period. Owing to The Yellow River burst its banks frequently, the flood becomes a very common phenomenon. Since people began to control the Yellow River, we have made a lot of achievements. Never has the Yellow River burst in the 60 years. Qian Ning, who was a sediment research professor returning from the USA in the early years of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, made an indelible contribution to People’s management of the Yellow River. The coarse sediment in the middle reaches of the Yellow River source area theory created by him has provided theoretical guidance for the source of coarse sand concentrated on the loess plateau area of soil and water conservation work. His study of scouring and silting in water and sediment, which concerns the Yellow River downstream riverbed evolution and the hyper-concentration flow, not only guide the construction and the renovation of the SanMenXia Project, but also affect the implementation of the water-sediment regulation strategy at the present stage. His two long-terms planning about training a new generation of sediment team and promoting the sediment research towards the world has changed the situation of talent shortage, and the insufficient of international cooperation in the early years of the founding of new China, thus ensured the sustainable development of the Yellow River’s control. This paper tries to use the theory and methods of historical materialism to make a more detailed summary about the contribution of Qian Ning in the field of controlling the water and the sand of the Yellow River. Besides, I attempt to analyze the cause of his achievements from the aspects of his wide range of knowledge and his good character and working methods ect, to provide reference for the control of the Yellow River as well as the historical research of the Yellow River’s management.
