Simultaneous interpreting (SI) on TV today facilitates ad hoc cross-lingual communication and brings to the viewer the arguments and counter arguments by related foreign experts in a time-critical manner. It is a complex communicative verbal activity featuring high intensity, high expectations from the viewers and news oriented. It is a well established fact that the errors are unavoidable in the process of simultaneous interpreting, even for an excellent interpreter. However, at present, researches on SI on TV in China are carried out at a slow pace. The present thesis conducts a case study of the simultaneous interpreting of "Malaysian PM’s Press Statement on MH370-15 March 2014" based on the Interpretive Theory and makes a comparative study among three interpretation versions respectively offered by CCTV International, CCTV News and Phoenix TV so as to improve the quality of SI on TV. Some common failures in SI on TV are highlighted, including distortion, omission, addition, ambiguity and redundancy. The possible reasons are misuse of effort, improper flexibility and inadequate public speaking skills. In order to address the above mentioned problems, the present thesis proposes the online strategies, including anticipation, timing, syntactic linearity, simplification, supplementation, repetition of pronunciation and revision, and discusses the improvement of backstage conditions from the perspectives of the enhancement of the interpreters’ comprehensive skills and the improvement of objective conditions in SI on TV, which show its practical value and enriches the study on SI on TV.
