An Analysis On Improving The Quality Of Target Language Production In Consecutive Interpretation In The Light Of Interpretive Theory

The bottleneck for interpreters in consecutive interpreting is always caused by the listening obstacle, the note-taking obstacle and the reproduction obstacle, all of which to some extent are due to the interpreter’s over-emphasis on the superficial language forms instead of the grasp of the meaning or sense carried by the language forms. This will negatively influence the quality of the reproduced target language and the overall performance of the interpreter. In this sense, the author discusses the solution of these problems in the light of Interpretive theory or the Theory of Sense. Based on the Gile’s Efforts Model, this thesis tries to illustrate how the interpreters could, in light of the Interpretive Theory, coordinate their efforts to deal with several tasks in each phase of consecutive interpretation, including what to listening and what to take note of, with a view to help the interpreters in the actual management of each tasks. This thesis also elaborates on "Chinglish" and "Westernized English", two factors affecting the reproduction quality. By defining them and analysing their features, the author gives some suggestions on how to avoid them in interpretation. In a word, the author presents this thesis in the hope of helping interpreter to improve the quality of their reproduction.
