The Simulated Practice Report From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

With the increasingly frequent international exchanges and coorperations incolleges and universities, the president’s commencement speech, as the importantcarrier of college propaganda, becomes a name card to expand foreign exchanges. Thepresident’s commencement speech is different from the other public speech, its mainpurpose is to give students a kind of education of encougement and guidance. We canperceive the spirit of a university of a country from president’s content, style,imposing manner of speech and demeanor.The priciple of interpretating the president’ s commencement speech shouldreflect the declaration and purpose of the original text,which happens to coincide withGerman functional Skopos Theory completely. German functional translation SkoposTheory holds that translation purpose determines translation method. It emphasizesthe translator’s subjective initiative and advocates taking different translation methodsaccording to translation purpose. Skopos Theory is the basic theory of translation,which can be applied to translation as well as interpretation. In the process ofinterpreting, the interpreter should take flexible strategies under the guidance ofskopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule. Guided by the translation Skopos Theory,the author takes president of South China University of Technology, Li Yuanyuan’scommencement speech in2011as source text to do practice of simultaneousinterpretation to explore the interpretation strategies. The author adopts literalinterpretation, free interpretation, omission and interpretative interpretation asstrategies to solve the problems in the process of interpretation practice to achievesmooth communication. This paper hopes to provide reference for the futureinterpreting practice in this aspect through the analysis of the selected typical casesand the correspondent solutions.This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces thebackground and significance of the selected text. The second chapter introduces themain contents and the three rule of the translation Skopos Theory guiding this simultaneous practice. The third chapter introduces the process of the practicalimplementation. The fourth chapter, the key part of this paper, analyses thecharacteristics of the selected text and interpretation strategies adopted and does caseanalysis. The fifth chapter summarizes the experiences and leanings.
