As an important embodiment of self-efficacy in the field of learning, academic self-efficacy has attracted many scholars’attention. University freshmen who have just entered a new environment are facing new challenges about not only the way of life but also learning methods. So how to improve the learning efficiency of university students and help them transit from the middle school to the university more successfully is a problem worthy of our research. It has been proved that their learning efficiency can be improved through intervention training such as group counselling. Therefore, in order to explore the effect of group counseling on freshmen’s academic self-efficacy, this study includes the following two parts:Based on document analysis, study1drew up a group counseling training plan aiming at improving the academic self-efficacy, according to earlier theoretical research and existing empirical research on the influential factors on academic self-efficacy. Study2adopted the above-mentioned plan to carry out an empirical research to see whether group counseling have valid effect on elevating freshmen’s academic self-efficacy. Study2selected ninety-six2013freshmen from the Foreign Institute of the Central South University of Forestry and Technology as the research objects, using three kinds of intervention methods——the experimental group of group psychological counseling, the group of knowledge training, and the control group without any processing——to compare the elevating level of academic self-efficacy, and then compared the effects of these three kinds of intervention strategies. The conclusions of this research are as follows:1、 We collected participants from particular school to randomly assign to counseling group, knowledge-training group and blank group using pre-test and pro-test. The experimental group and the knowledge training group received a weekly experimental intervention, eight times in total, while the blank group went without any processing. Then Liang Yusong’s academic self-efficacy questionnaire was adopted. After the experiment, there was a statistical analysis of the experimental data by using SPSS13.0.The results as follows:(1)After different interventions, the academic self-efficacy scale total score of the knowledge training group, the experimental group and the blank group shows F=3.842, p=0.025(p<0.05) with significant difference.(2)On the dimension of academic self-efficacy in learning ability, the posttest score of the experimental group, knowledge training group and the blank group shows F=3.378, p=0.038(p<0.05) with significant difference.(3)On the dimension of academic self-efficacy in learning behavior, the posttest score of the experimental group, knowledge training group and blank group shows F=1.377, p=0.257(p>0.05) without significant difference. The results show that the group counseling program based on academic self-efficacy can significantly improve their academic self-efficiency.2、According to the collective sharing of the experimental group members, personal interviews and the feedback analysis of the observers, the group counseling program has gained favor and recognition from most of the members. It mainly reflects in the members’ recognition of the counseling ways of group discussions with games. It makes them re-understand their learning ability, master more learning strategies and make them more confident in improving their academic performance.
