An Analysis On Long Sentence Processing In English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpretation

This thesis explores the effects of long sentences on the quality of English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation. Based on relevant theories, this thesis discusses the types and features of long sentences in English, and the features of simultaneous interpretation. On this basis, the thesis points out why it is difficult to handle long sentences in English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation. The thesis then proposes coping tactics for improvement.It starts with Daniel Gile’s Effort Model and discusses the types and features of long sentences in English, and the features of simultaneous interpretation. Then the thesis proposes two major tactics, and then illustrates the effectiveness of these tactics.The introduction of related theories is followed by an empirical study designed to examine the effects of long sentences and coping tactics. Eight second-year student interpreters of GSTI trained for about eight months in SI were invited to do simultaneous interpretation on a speech delivered by Barack Obama (the president of U.S.) on CEO Business Summit in Yokohama, Japan. Performance evaluation criteria were determined and statistical analysis was carried out. And conclusion was drawn from the quantitative analysis that long English sentences have negative impact on E-C simultaneous interpretation. And qualitative analysis shows that by employing the tactics proposed, the quality of interpretation can be improved.
