English-Chinese consecutive interpreting is widely used on many occasions of politics and economy by virtue of the rapid development of China’s reform and opening up to the outside world.More and more people are learning interpretation and even choose interpreting as their career.However,interpretation is a challenging work which has many demanding requirements for the interpreters.During the process of interpretation,it is unavoidable for the interpreters to meet with some English long and difficult sentences.How to perfectly tackle with these sentences and present a smooth and successful interpretation is of great value and importance.Therefore,this thesis concentrates on the English long and difficult sentences in English to Chinese(E-C)consecutive interpretation(CI)to find out some possible coping strategies for the interpreters.This thesis analyzes the characteristics of English long and difficult sentences with an intention to provide some coping solutions to tackle with it.First of all,by providing some examples from the author’s personal experience of interpretation,the author tries to summarize the three characteristics of English long and difficult sentences,including multiple modifiers,multiple coordinate components and multiple levels of language structures.In addition,the thesis discussed about some difficulties caused by English long and difficult sentences for the interpreter such as the difficulties of listening comprehension,the heavy memory burden and the excessive psychological stress.Finally,on the basis of Daniel Gile’s Interpretation Equation and the Effort Model Theory,possible coping strategies to English long and difficult sentences are given through the lexical and the syntactical levels,the knowledge level and the way of note-taking,which provide some practical and specific methods for interpreters to improve the quality of E-C consecutive interpretation.
