This translation report is the summary of the8essay C-E (Chinese-to-English) translation projects of Essay Monthly, Issue7,2013. It focuses on the translation of metaphors and is a personal simulation practice used for translation skill development.Essay Monthly is a literature magazine in which multiple rhetoric skills are employed to reveal the wisdom in life and set the readers thinking. It exposes abnormal and unreasonable phenomena in life and satirizes backward people or things. Due to the differences between Chinese and western cultures and languages, the author found it difficult to find the closest equivalents of the metaphorical objects in English. There are three difficulties in translating them.(1) The absence of closest equivalents in English with Chinese-specific expressions as metaphorical objects.(2) The absence of closest equivalents in English with common sayings as metaphorical objects.(3) Difficulty in the transformation of metaphorical objects embodied in common words with cultural connotations. This project, guided by Eugene A. Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, followed the two basic principles of formal equivalence and dynamic equivalence to solve the three afore-mentioned problems. The author strived to maintain formal equivalence when possible and resorted to dynamic equivalence in terms of meaning and effect when necessary. As for the first problem, the author utilized the methods of literal translation with annotation and giving up metaphorical objects. For the second difficulty, naturalization was used and image translation and implied meaning translation were employed to address the third problem.
