This source text of this translation practice is Chapter 12 of Mineral Exploration:Principles and Applications, and the main content is mining elements.Mineral Exploration: Principles and Applications is a book on mineral exploration,it contains a lot of technical words, and its structure is rigorous, which makes it a right material for practicing and mastering translation skills of EST of mining.Scientific texts focus on the accuracy of information transmission, while functional equivalence theory advocates the use of natural and equivalent language to reproduce the information of a source at both semantic level and stylistic level. Therefore, functional equivalence theory has a positive guiding role in improving the quality of translation of English for science and technology(EST).Guided by the functional equivalence theory, this report adheres to the principle of emphasizing meaning equivalence first, and the formal equivalence secondly. And on the basis of professional knowledge, translation strategies for technical words,semi-technical words, nominalization, passive sentences, long and difficult sentences and technological styles are discussed from lexical, syntactic, and stylistic level. The report finds that the functional equivalence theory has practical and feasible guiding significance for the translation of EST.In terms of lexis, technical words can be annotated and nominalization can be transformed into verb. For syntax, passive sentences can be changed to active sentences, and the sentence structure can be adjusted appropriately. At the stylistic level,well-thought-out structure, concise logic, clear levels, and prominent points should be paid attention to,so that the accurate transmission of scientific and technological information can be guaranteed. This report consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the translation project, including the background of the task, the significance of the task,a brief introduction to the source text and the language features of the source text. The second chapter introduces the functional equivalence theory and its application in translation of EST.The third chapter describes the translation practice process, including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.The fourth chapter is about case analysis, and the author analyzes translation strategies of EST from lexical syntactic, and stylistic level based on functional equivalence theory. And the last chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes translation practice.
