A Report On The Translation Of The China Column Of The Economist

This project is based on the E-C translation of15news reports in the China column of The Economist, which cover the fields of China’s politics, economy, culture, commerce and science. Various long and complicated sentences are adopted in the news reports of The Economist so that it can deliver as much as information with the limited space. The translation of the complicated sentences is the main difficulty of the project, which manifests as the following three aspects:a) complicated sentence structure; b) complex modifier; c) complex parenthesis.Functional Equivalence Theory, proposed by Eugene Nida, emphasizes that during the translation process, the structures of the sentences should be adjusted for delivering the information and spirit of the source text, which can provide guidance for translation of news reports. Under the framework of Functional Equivalence Theory, this report analyzed the difficulties with corresponding examples of translating complicated sentences in the15news reports and explored the proper translation methods:Segmentation, Reconstruction, Embedding, Division and Inversion. The methods summarized in this report are of great significance in guiding the translation of the news reports and can help successfully deliver the information, spirit and features of the source text.
