Abstract/Summary:
In the era of rapid development of network, the latest information is obtained promptly through various channels, among which news is the main way of information dissemination. In this translation project,14 articles related to COVID-19 in The Economist were selected from March 2020 to April 2021 with the total number of 30,000.The Economist is a news commentary text with strong professionalism, flexible language and complex sentence patterns.Under the guidance of Catford’s translation shifts theory, this report analyzes the stylistic features of source text from level shifts and category shifts, hence the solutions are found and the translation strategies for the source text are summarized. In the analysis of level shifts, according to the language features of the accuracy of the text, shifts on tense is employed to make the tense of the translation consistent with the time of events, and shifts on plural nouns is used to present the quantifiers of the original text.In the analysis of category shifts, the theories of structure shifts, unit shifts, class shifts and Intra-system shifts are applied, and translation strategies such as literal translation, amplification and sentence restructuring are used to solve translation problems of long and compound sentences and cultural differences.Catford’s translation shifts theory emphasizes text equivalence.Based on the analysis of the stylistic features of the news commentary text, applicable translation strategies are employed to transform the source text into the target text that conforms to the expression style of the target language.
