Domesticating Translation From Legal English Into Chinese At The Sentence Level

Legal English is used by lawyers from English-speaking countries. It is also used bylawyers from English-dominated countries or districts to solve civil and criminal issues. AnEnglish agreement is a form of the legal document and it always follows common rules oflegal English, especially in its sentence usage. English and Chinese are two differentlanguages. In translating, if we just follow English sentence construction and translate intoChinese without any modification, the whole translation will be understood with difficulty byChinese readers, because the translation is different from their wording. Domesticatingtranslation is one of the frequently used translation methods, which attaches importance totarget language culture and follows its writing style. In English-Chinese translation,domesticating translation respects Chinese culture and its language style and readers, and thusdomesticating translation is useful for English-Chinese sentence translation. This report iscomposed of four parts. The first part is an introduction, including source text introduction,and the significance and construction of this report. The second part gives a theoretical basis,starting from sentence level to give a brief view of domesticating translation. The third part istranslation examples by using three skills based on domesticating translation. The last part isthe conclusion of the report.
