There is much controversy over the medium of instruction in the teaching of the second language. Is teacher supposed to teach by using the target language, by turning to the medium of instruction, by applying both the target language and medium of instruction teaching at the same time? How and how often will a teacher use the medium of instruction? All the above are important issues in researching classroom teaching.The thesis studies and analyses the use of medium of instruction in class, with the Chinese teacher of ELTE Confucius Institute as subject of my research. After doing practice teaching in ELTE Confucius Institute for one year, the author analyses the using of the medium of instruction by giving out the student questionnaires as well as teacher questionnaires, observing Chinese class teaching and interviewing Chinese teachers to collect data and information. The research studies the results after surveying and making statistics of the questionnaires of students and teachers as well as the use of medium of instruction in class. Meanwhile, this study deals with the teaching of Chinese language in English or in Chinese, the difficulties Chinese teachers encounter and their attitudes to the medium of instruction by interviewing five Chinese teachers.In this way, this study investigates whether or not to use the medium of instruction in the teaching of Chinese language in Hungary, how to use the medium of instruction, and teaching method as well as frequency of using the medium of instruction in classroom. Based on the analysis of the results of the questionnaires, classroom observation, and teaching interview, this research is aimed at putting forward some effective suggestion on how to use of the medium of instruction in Chinese teaching in Hungary and some significant ideas to promote the development of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.In this paper, the first chapter mainly deals with the significance and purpose of the research and the definition of medium of instruction and the use of medium of instruction in teaching Chinese as a foreign language research. It involves the use of medium of instruction in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and a summary of the ELTE Confucius Institute of Chinese language teaching, as the research background and starting point of this paper. The second chapter is about the object and method of questionnaire, the statistical analysis of questionnaire results of students and teachers survey in Chinese teaching. It also involves the feedback and opinion of teachers and students to use English as the medium of language teaching. The third chapter records, analysis, and survey what medium of instruction teachers use at different teaching stages and how often different module class use English as the medium of instruction. Based on effective feedback and how well students accept it in the class, it discusses the effectiveness in the use of appropriate medium of instruction, and thus it puts forward some suggestions and thinking. The fourth chapter is mainly about the interview of two groups of teachers of ELTE Confucius Institute, those who use the medium of instruction and those who teach in Chinese in Chinese teaching. It interviews teachers who teach at ELTE Confucius Institute social adult class, Hungarian-Chinese Bilingual Primary School and Lauder Javne Primary School. Taking to different situation of the use of the medium of language into consideration, there are six to five interviews, recording the class teaching in English and the difficulties without a medium. Thus, it comes to a conclusion at last, and puts forward the rational use of the medium of instruction.This paper, based on the research of the Chinese teaching in the ELTE Confucius Institute, is to make some suggestions about the use of the medium of instruction in Chinese teaching and to offer some references as well as supplement on the subject. To be specific in a certain country during investigation and study is innovative in this research. Meanwhile, there are still some deficiencies and limitations in the paper as a case study, which needs to modify and perfect constantly.
