With China’s international position on the rise, the international community is paying increasing attention to China. Each March sees China hosting two sessions, namely, National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. During these two sessions, press conferences are held for journalists from home and abroad and answer their questions. These press conferences, with China as the focus, feature distinct Chinese cultural elements. Chinese premier would answer certain questions inciting Chinese poems, which is a highlight of the press conferences. But that also poses challenges to interpreters. Excellent interpretation will add to the appeal of the press conference, while inadequate or even wrong interpretation will bring severe consequences. In light of the Interpretive Theory, this thesis addresses the issue of rendering poems used by Wen Jiabao in press conferences. The first part is a brief introduction. The second part is an introduction description of background, content and significance of the thesis. The third part-- includes preparation, comparison of translation and interpretation and problems that might occur during press conference interpretation of Chinese poems. The fourth part serves as the theoretical basis of this thesis, which includes the development of interpretative theory, content of the theory as well as the role of interpretive theory in the interpretation of China poems. In the last part, the criteria and techniques of the interpretation of Chinese poems are put forward based on the features of interpretation and poem translation.Besides, examples from the author’s intimated practice exemplify theses criteria and techniques in the hope of providing some revelation for interpretation of Chinese poems in future press conference.
