On The Translation Of Tour Commentary From The Perspective Of Intercultural Communication

With the development of globalization, an increasing number of foreign tourists come to visit China, which has an increasing effect on China’s tourism. Therefore, it is necessary to render Chinese tour commentary into English. A normative and humorous English tour commentary can not only introduce the culture and history of places of interest without any flaws, but give foreign tourists a whole picture of Chinese culture. On the contrary, a less normative tour commentary translation or a tour commentary translation with errors may cause miscommunications between two people. Therefore, enough attention should be paid to the C-E translation of tour commentary.From the perspective of the intercultural communication, the thesis, taking the translation of gathered tour commentary as a case study, discusses the preparation, process and after-translation work, and explores how intercultural communication can be applied to the present translation practice from the level of lexis, syntax and finally summarizes the translation strategies and techniques of the tour commentary. The first chapter demonstrates the background of tour commentary translation and introduces this translation task as well as meaning of the research. The second chapter presents characteristics of tour commentary from the level of linguistics and text. Translation process and checking are also included. The third chapter, guided by features of tour commentary translation, elaborates the connection between intercultural communication and tour translation. The fourth chapter is about translation strategies, such as: transliteration, liberal translation, literal translation, analogy, omission and addition. The last chapter reviews writing thoughts and makes a conclusion that:tour commentary translator should take linguistic characteristics and texts into fully consideration before translation strategies are given. However, no strategy is applicable in all the conditions. Translators, thus, should work out measures to suit concrete condition.Translation practice shows that practice should be supported by theory. Guided by its language and text features, tour commentary translator should summarize correspondent translation strategies from the perspective of intercultural communication. However, since translation strategies listed above are not applicable to the entire tour commentary test, more translation practice is required.
