Translation is not simply seeking other words with similar meaning, but of finding appropriate ways to express meaning in another language. Translation is always meaning-based, it is the transfer of meaning instead of form from the source language to the target language. To achieve a good translation, it requires translator be familiar with the differences between the two languages. This report aims to help reader know more about western culture.This is a project report on the The life of Washington by Washington Irving, a well-known American writer. As for the difficult part of the translation, the author takes various methods to solve these problems under the guidance of translation theory of translation equivalence.This report is divided into four parts. The first part is the background knowledge, including the source meaning and structure of the project; The second part is the introduction about the source text and the writer. The third part is about quality control. The last is the conclusion.
