An Analysis Of Techniques Of Interpreting Poems In Chinese-English Simultaneous Interpretation

Translation is like a bridge. Because of translation, the Babel Tower collapsed and different continents scattered on this big blue planet were connected. All that contributed to the birth of Global Village. There are many different forms of translation. In terms of how the target language will be output, there are interpretation and translation. Among various sorts of translation, simultaneous interpreting(SI) is considered to represent the highest level in this field.However, the paramount position of SI comes at a cost one of which is to give up the beauty embodied in the source language. As for C hinese poems, that beauty is the life of its words. Wen Jiabao, former C hinese Premier, quoted lots of sentences of poems during press conference after two sessions(NPC and CPPCC), which not only demonstrated his profound literature reserve, but let us catch a glimpse of the glamour of Chinese poems. The consecutive interpreter began coming into the public attention due to her precise and authentic translation. Their long-lasting memories, quick response and superb translation ability impressed everyone. Here is a question, how should we deal with poems or its sentences when we are doing SI? Could we pass the state of the poem to listeners? Could we keep the beauty in our translation?This thesis excerpted certain number of poems quoted by Premier Wen. Then, these sentences were interpreted by students majoring in Interpretation. All the process was recorded and then transcribed. The translation was compared with the version of consecutive interpreting(CI). Through analysis of the content and structure of SI translation and referring to the Interpretive Theory, the writer tried to seek measures of dealing with C hinese poems in the process of SI.
