This is a translation project report on the translation of Chapter 8 of The Triumph of Democracy and the Eclipse of the West, entitled “Conclusion: A Global Spring”, written by Ewan Harrison and Sara Mc Laughlin Mitchell, American professors of political science. The book elaborates on the paradox of the worldwide spread of democracy and capitalism in an era of western decline. The main contents of this report are divided into four parts: Part One is the translation project introduction, including project background, significance and structure. Part Two is the introduction to the source text, including the author introduction, main contents of the source text and linguistic features of the source text. Part Three is the translation process. According to Newmark’s text typology, the source text can be put into the category of informative texts. The translation of such texts should focus on “accuracy” and “readability”, and should follow the “communicative translation” strategy. So “accuracy” and “readability” are priorities of the translation. Besides, the “communicative translation” strategy is also used in the translation. The translation difficulties lie in the translation of specialized terminology and complex sentences. The translation methods include reversion and division. Part Four concludes with the implication and unsolved problems in the translation project.
