Strategies For E-C Consecutive Interpretation In Foreign Affairs From The Perspective Of Relevance Translation Theory

With the development of China’s economy and the increasing of opening-up two common forms of interpretation, consecutive interpretation and simultaneous interpretation, are often used in foreign affairs. Foreign affairs interpretation is a special type of interpreting, which involves diploma policy of a country and has a strong political purpose. Foreign affairs interpretation also involves many sensitive proposition, which requires the interpreter to translate the original language accurately. Recent years, with the increasing of foreign affairs, the interpretation quality are requested higher than before. It required the interpreter to understand the connotation of the source language which contain many communicative purposes efficiently and accurately in a short time and express it in another language properly. In fact, the purpose of every kind of interpretation is to keep semantic translation, communicative translation and the combination of the two translations. This theory has consistency with the relevance translation theory proposed by Peter Newmark. Relevance translation theory, therefore, can be provide some useful theoretical guidance for consecutive interpretation between English and Chinese applied in foreign affairs interpretation.On the basis of Newmark’s translation theory, this paper has explained the research status of consecutive interpretation between English and Chinese in foreign affairs, the framework of relevance translation theory and the strategy analysis of foreign affairs under the guideline of translation theory combined with the Presidential Meeting between Xi Jinping and Obama at the Annenberg Estate in 2013 as the corpus analysis, it aims to study the translation strategies of English-Chinese consecutive interpretation in foreign affairs.Through the analysis of the video collection, I found that the characteristics of the foreign affairs interpretation determined the first priority of English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation was to make the source language correspond to the target language in the most extend, so as to achieve the desired communicative purpose. Semantically, to realize the syntactic linearity, source language meaning should be matched, the corresponding semantic interpretation is also necessary. As for communicative, the interpretation principle of paring down and sentence reconstruction should be taken when necessary. On the combination of semantic and communicative translation, the cultural blank and characteristic vocabulary also should be dealt with due to the characteristics of consecutive interpretation. Be sure neither in the translation of "dualism", nor do a "machine type" translation. Both interpreters used these interpretation methods and strategies which improved the English-Chinese consecutive interpretation quality greatly, which has a certain positive guiding role for me as well as foreign affairs interpreters on some difficult problems.
