As the bridge of communication, translation plays an important role in human’s activity. For different histories, cultural background, social environment, religious belief and customs, in different country people have their own language structures and expressions. Translation is not only for information but also for culture. When we do translation, we should not only transfer the information completely and correctly but also make our version closer to the language habit and cultural background of the target language. However, no completely equivalence between the two languages makes translation loss inevitable. As a result, we should make some compensation in our translation when we meet these gaps. Taking The Americans: The Democratic Experience excerpts as example, my paper applies translation compensation and concludes some methods to shift people’s attention to compensation. My paper includes five parts: First, the author introduces the objective limitation and the inevitability of translation compensation. Second, the author thoroughly introduces the process of this translation practice and the feature of my text. Third, the author concludes the reason of translation loss and the types of translation compensation. Forth, the author presents some typical examples and analysis of my translation from cultural and language structural aspects. The last part is the conclusion. Through this translation practice, the author realizes the importance of translation compensation and concludes some methods to translation in the future.
