A Corpus-based Study On Implicitation Of Logical Relations In Three Chinese Translations Of Shakespeare’s Plays

Along with the advancement of corpus-based translation studies, translationuniversals has gained more and more attention. Among them, implicitation iscomparatively under-researched. Moreover, most findings on implicitation are onlyby-products of research on explicitation and are mainly confined to lexical andsyntactical aspects. In addition, those studies are mostly qualitative, based on a fewtexts. Different from previous studies, this thesis aims to explore implicitation oflogical relations in the context of English-Chinese drama translations. Making use ofthe English-Chinese Parallel Corpus of Shakespeare’s Plays and some software tools,this study observes and analyzes the Chinese translations of four types of Englishlogical conjunctions: additive, adversative, conditional and causal conjunctions so asto find out how the corresponding logical relations of these conjunctions are expressedin translation.After a detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis, this thesis finds thatimplicitation of logical relations does occur on a large scale. Besides, the four types oflogical relations are made implicit to various degrees, and these logical relations aremade implicit on different levels in the three translations. In addition, findings of thisstudy illustrate that the language system factor, the communicative and pragmaticfactor as well as the translator factor all have influence on the implicitation of logicalrelations in English-Chinese drama translations.This study can fill the research gap by offering more data for studies ofimplicitation in English-Chinese drama translations, and contribute to theunderstanding of translation process. Moreover, the corpus-based approach, statisticalanalysis and qualitative interpretation in this thesis can shed some light on futurestudies.
