Reproducing The Atmosphere In Thriller Translation

The present thesis for MTI degree is composed of two parts. Part One is a translation of four chapters from Jennifer Lee Carrell’s popular thriller, a horror and mystery fiction, Haunt Me Still, and Part Two is a critical review and comment on the translation, discussing the problems encountered in the process of translating this thriller into Chinese and the strategies to reproduce the "equivalence" in translation.As popular fictions, thrillers attach great importance to the creation of a terrifying and mysterious atmosphere to attract readers’interest. And the exquisite use of environment description, sound effect and rhetoric plays an important role in the creation of atmosphere. It is from these perspectives that this thesis studies the possible strategies applicable in translating horror and mystery fictions into Chinese. According to Nida’s "Equivalence" theory, I analyze the difference of effects and readers’ responses among different translations, which hopefully could provide some insights for the application of "Equivalence" theory into translation.Through the practice, I found that different translations reproduce different levels of "equivalence", and create effect and render readers’response in varied degree. In my opinion, the translator should keep a close eye on the equivalence between source language and receptor language; he should respect the original work by keeping the scary and suspense effect; he should choose the closest possible equivalent based on the atmosphere; he also should be sensitive to the details and select the appropriate translation strategy.
