ObjectiveTo evaluate academic emotions and mental health of students from amedical college in Liaoning province, and analyze influencing factors ofacademic emotions and mental health. To investigate the relationship betweenacademic emotions and mental health among college students. Provide areference on improving academic emotions and mental health.MethodsCluster random sampling was adopted in the survey of968medicalstudents in a college. Questionnaire include academic emotions questionnairefor college student (assessing academic emotions), general psychopathology(Symptom Checklist-90)(assessing mental health) and information onsocio-demographic characteristics. T-test, χ2test and one-way ANOVA wereperformed to analysis influencing factors of academic emotions and mentalhealth, and the Pearson product-moment coefficient was used to research therelationship between academic emotions and mental health by using of SPSS17.0statistical analysis software.ResultsPositive academic emotions was not identical among students in differentgender(P<0.05), and female students experienced more positive academicemotions such as enjoyment and hope. Negative academic emotions was not identical among students in different provinces(P<0.05), and students fromother provinces experienced less negative academic emotions such as shameand anxiety. The difference of academic emotions among college students indifferent categories, such as arts and science, one-child and children withsibling, urban and rural, was not statistically significant.The score over160on the SCL-90scale was treated as positiveidentification. The positive rate of SCL-90was not identical among students indifferent gender(P<0.05), and female students had a lower rate. The differenceof positive rate of SCL-90among college students in different categories, suchas arts and science, one-child and children with sibling, urban and rural,Liaoning province and other provinces, was not statistically significant.The level of mental health was not identical among students in differentgender(P<0.05), and male students had higher scores on the SCL-90totalscale and seven subscales(somatization,interpersonal sensitivity,depression,anxiety,hostility, paranoid ideation, psychoticism).The difference of the score ofSCL-90scale among college students in different categories, such as arts andscience, one-child and children with sibling, urban and rural, Liaoning provinceand other provinces, was not statistically significant.Academic emotions were important factors to mental health among collegestudents. The higher the score of positive academic emotions, the score ofSCL-90scale lower(P<0.05); the higher negative academic emotions, SCL-90scale higher(P<0.05).ConclusionThere were more obvious problems with academic emotions and mentalhealth among the male college students. Academic emotions associated withmental health. Persistent experience of negative academic emotions couldreduce the level of mental health. It is the key to enhance positive academicemotions for improving the level of mental health among college students.
