Economic exchange activities between China and countries in the world have becomeincreasingly frequent with the development of Chinese economy, and cultural exchanges havealso become an important channel to understand and communicate with each other. Scholorsat home and abroad have already studied cultural translation from different angles, such ascultural words, linguistic theories, and have achieved fruitful results. Publicity material oflocal culture is also an important way for Chinese cultural exchange, so translaton quality willhave a direct impact on the actual results of communication and dissemination.This is a practice report to study the translation of publicity materials of local culture.The author will select the publicity material of Meishan culture as the translation text andanalyze its translation process under the guide of Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory.For the purpose of spreading and promoting Meishan culture, the author will translate thematerial and analyze cases to explore translation skills of publicity materials of local cuture,which can provide experiences and guidances for translating this kind of text. In syntaxstructure, the translation text reflects the characteristics of typical Chinese sentences, which isbamboo-like structure whose emphasis laid on parataxis, using many verbs and scatteredsentences. This practice of translation will use verb conversion, voice conversion,combination method to accord with the characteristics of English sentence. Meanwhile, as thepublicity material of local culture, the translation text contains many vocabularies of localculture. To understand Meishan Culture, foreign friends have to get to know about the culturalfactors and cultural background. According to Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory,translation, in a sense, is both the intra-cultural communication and the inter-culturalcommunication, and is the cultural functional equivalence between the source text and thetarget text. Therefore, the translation should make the same effect of the source text.The translation of the publicity material of Meishan culture is to make foreign friends tounderstand Meishan culture. Under the guide of cultural translation theory, the translation willuse the method of compensation to make the communication smoothly. |
