An E-C Translation Report Of Selected Articles In Translation Quarterly

Translation Quarterly published by the Hong Kong Translation Society is a major international academic journal exploring theories and practice of translation. Since it was first issued in1995, Nobel judge Goran Malmqvist, American linguist Eugene Nida and British translator David Hawkes have ever written for it. The pursuit of excellent translation works of these masters provides translators with new perspectives. However, essays of translation criticism involve many factors, such as authors’ standpoints, cultural background and distinctive linguistic style, and also contain a large quantity of literary knowledge and translation terms. How to unveil the true feelings hidden in the source text, and enable readers to receive information in a comprehensive way without undermining readability of the translated text are major problems the author is committed to solving.This report is based on E-C translation of four articles selected from Translation Quarterly. In the light of text typology and Skopos theory, characteristics of the source texts are analyzed. Furthermore, the report is carried out from aspects of linguistic characteristics, syntactic and lexical level, and translation techniques such as restructure, division, conversion, explicitation and annotation are applied, so that faithful conveyance of the source text and smoothness of the target text are achieved, and therefore the target readers’ resonance can by aroused. What’s more, in order to achieve faithfulness and readability, guided by Cao Minglun’s six principles of note addition in translation work, analysis concerning translation and the addition of notes is conducted with examples, and relevant standards are summed up. In virtue of this report, the author would like to call for attention to "translation" itself. Meanwhile, relevant E-C translation techniques for texts of translation criticism are expected to be provided for further references.
