An Analysis Of Annotation In Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Subtitle translation,a new trend in translation practices in China,has more annotations than the previous.However,this phenomenon hasn’t received enough attention from academia.The thesis aims to study on annotation adding,one of the subtitle translation methods,hoping to make a little contribution in this field.The thesis studies the annotation in subtitle translation from the perspective of the skopos theory and takes White Collar translated by YYeTs as the case.Since the subtitle translation is audience-oriented,the skopos theory is the right choice of the study.Through a case study and questionnaire,the thesis focuses on the type of annotation in subtitle translation and suggestions on annotation adding to subtitle translators.Based on the analysis of annotations and questionnaire results,two findings have been made as follows.First,the annotation in subtitle translation can be classified by content and form.There are four types of the annotation classified by content,namely the annotation of the visual presentation,the annotation of the dialogue,the annotation of the BGM,and the annotation of the translator’s personal opinion;there are three types of the annotation classified by form including the annotation at the top of the screen,the annotation in parentheses in the translation,and the annotation in the middle of the screen.Second,as for the content of annotation,the translators should pay attention to annotations of the dialogue and visual presentation.In terms of the form,the annotation should be added at the top of the screen or in the middle of the screen and close to the ST.Generally,the annotation need to be concise and used as little as possible in case of distracting the audiences’ attention from enjoying TV drama.
