The Study Of Strategies Of Conference Interpretation Under The Guidance Of Interpretative Theory

Along with the rapid development of economic and social development, as well asthe continuous deepening of reform and opening up, China has more contact with theinternational community in various fields, including political, economic, cultural andmany other aspects. Conference interpreting plays an integral role in the political andeconomic arena. Appropriate conference interpreting strategies are likely to improve thequality of conference interpreting.Interpretive Theory is based on the practice of interpretation and the research ontranslation of the international conference. The theory proposes that the essence ofinterpretation is the transfer of meaning. The triangle model of Interpretive Theoryincludes Comprehension, De-verbalization and Reformulation, while the process ofinterpreting can be divided into comprehension, information processing and languageoutput. It can be easily seen that the triangle model of Interpretive Theory is inaccordance with the process of interpretation. Therefore, proper application ofInterpretive Theory in conference interpreting has a practical significance.This thesis reviews conference interpreting and Interpretive Theory as well asanalyzes the interpretation of the speech in Rio+20,2012by Hillary Clinton—a formerUS secretary of state and summarizes the strategies in the process of conferenceinterpreting: In language comprehension, when the spokesman’s intentions can’t beexpressed by the words of the speech accurately, the interpreter can adopt the method ofsemantic supplementary and semantic transformation, aiming to conform to the originalmeanings of the source language; In information processing, when long and difficultsentences appear, the interpreter may segment sense groups to keep fluency. Whensemantic redundancy appears in the source language, the interpreter can adopt themethod of simplicity to make the target language more concise; in language output, dueto the different modes of thinking between Chinese and English as well as the differentsentence structure, the logic processing method can be used when interpreting. Inaddition, the interpreter should not only send the message, but also convey the emotionsand points of view of the speaker. It is hoped that the conclusion of this thesis mayprovide some help for interpreting learners and make contributions to the research ofconference interpreting.
