Information should be conveyed accurately and completely from source language totarget language by interpreters. In order to achieve the best interpreting quality andcommunication effect, any interpreter should try his or her best to avoid information lossin interpreting. The author, in this thesis, defines information loss in interpreting, andattempts to find out the causes of information loss in interpreting. Strategies and copingtactics are suggested to prevent information loss in interpretation. It consists of fourchapters excluding an introduction and a conclusion. In introduction, the author explainswhy the thesis should be presented. The statement starts from a brief review ofinterpreting research on information fidelity, with a conclusion that few literatures arecontributed on information loss. The significance of this thesis is also proved from theimportant role of information loss in information fidelity and interpreting quality.Chapter One describes the background of this investigation report and the reasons thatcause it. Information loss arises because of the interpreter’s language incompetence,cultural incompetence and his/her mismanagement of attention. It is a generalphenomenon of information loss in interpreting. Chapter Two makes attempts to depictsthe objective of this investigation report, the purpose is to put forward some strategies toavoid this phenomenon. Chapter Three describes specific content of the investigation,involving the significance of the task, the object of the task and data findings andanalysis. Chapter Four puts forward strategies and coping tactics to prevent informationloss in interpreting. Strategies to enhance language, cultural and attention managementcompetence are proposed for interpreters. Coping tactics offer some help for them tomaintain balanced distribution of processing capacity. The last part is the conclusion,which concludes the whole passage and also points out the limitations.
