| Interpretation, a cross-cultural activity that transfers information from the originallanguage to the target language, effectively promotes the communication betweendifferent language users. To interpreters, a main task is to ensure the successfulinformation flow to guarantee the efficient communication between the speaker and theaudience. However, the information loss will seriously affect the interpretation quality,even result in negative consequences.By studying the transcripts of previous interpreting practices, this thesis aims tofind out the main factors that affected information loss: First, insufficient vocabularyleads to the information loss, because interpreters, during interpretation, directly omitinformation that they are unfamiliar with. Second, some cross-cultural informationmakes it difficult for interpreters to translate the original language into target languagedue to cultural variations of two different languages and the low proficiency ofinterpreters to deal with the cross-cultural factor. Third, low proficiency in note-takingskill causes the loss of information or incapability of ensuring the information flowaccording to notes when speakers have varied habits or ignored the existence ofinterpreter, too much information is delivered at one time. Fourth, too much pressureseverely influences the thinking of interpreter and results in the loss of informationespecially for beginner of interpretation in formal occasions.According to these factors and related previous experience, by studying analyzingand concluding the improved conditions of information loss, the methods of improvingoral interpretation are raised. Firstly, the interpreter could solve the lexical difficultiesthrough the adequate lexical preparation and daily-based accumulation. Secondly, theinterpreter could also cultivate the cross-cultural awareness and make good use oftranslation skills flexibly to avoid information loss due to cross-cultural reason.Thirdly, symbols, abbreviations and other ways of training could be used to improvenote-taking. Fourthly, the interpreter could try the positive autosuggestion to transferthe psychological stress into motivation and build confidence and alleviate the stressthrough the comprehensive preparation. |
