The main purposes of oversea students coming China to learn Chinese is oralcommunicating and text processing, the appearance of language chunk theory make iteasy to improve their Chinese learning. In the recent years, chunk theory remains a hottopic in the research of SLA(Second Language Acquisition).As time passed, peoplegradually realize that most parts of our daily speech are not made up of those minimallinguistic elements temporary, instead, they can be originated directly from the languagechunk objectively existed. Currently the theory has been applied extensively in foreignChinese teaching which is well-liked among teachers and students. The fast developmentof the language chunk owes to the years’ researching of those linguistic seniors, from theinitial bring-in to the broadly application now and in future. The chunk theory is amethod of integrated memorizing, which exists not only in books, but also in dailycommunications.The paper includes a comparatively systematic introduction of the chunk theory,which will focus on the definition and the classifications presented by the scholars. Onthis basis, the paper will make a further research of the classifications combining thebook Developed Chinese and Intermediate-Oral English. The language chunk isclassified to functional chunk and grammatical chunk which suits better in the students’foreign language learning and has a important significance in SLA. It can conduce toexpress normative and customary texts to make their using of language more fluent andauthentic. Moreover, it also can conduce to lower wrong expressions, finally, improve thelanguage competence. In order to prove the importance of the chunk in Chinese learning,the paper will take some real corpus from Developed Chinese and Intermediate-OralEnglish as study object to analyze and count. This book is a great guidance one in chunkteaching, in which the texts and exercises in this book are all comparatively same levelfor intermediate students and conform to daily communication.The combination of chunk theory and textbook can provide practice instruction foroversea students to complete the communication successfully. We firmly believe thepositive influence of the chunk theory in foreign language teaching. Therefore, we needto classify the chunks specifically in the teaching. It also require the teachers to enhance their awareness and pay more attention to chunk theory in the teaching to truly apply thetheory into practice.
