A Research Of The Thematic Derivation Of Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony

Jean Sibelius, the greatest composer of the Finnish Musical Nationalism at the turn of the20th Century, explored a distinct field of symphonic composing. His symphonies sufficiently inherit the Classical and the Romantic traditions, whilst implying his unique personal style. To replace other old developing techniques, he created a series of derivation techniques in his works, especially in his7th Symphony. In this paper, a textual analysis is the first step to reveal the structure characteristic of the Seventh Symphony. In order to elaborate the process and characters of the thematic derivation of its theme, this paper analyses the text of Sibelius’s7th Symphony, with focus on its musical development and structural organization, i.e. its derivation techniques. Later, the article also discussed the symphony’s Aesthetic connotation to interpret how the autonomy and the heteronomy of the music became highly fused. Finally, it explored the development of the music history to reveal the fractal characteristics of the structure of music history.
