Based on the general definition and distinguishing standard of discourse markers inconversational analysis, this thesis adopts theories of Grammaticalization and ConstructionGrammar to analyze “Bu shi wo shuo ni” frequently appeared in the Northern Chinese dialect,focusing on its basic structure and components as well as its evolutionary approach andevolutionary motivations. This thesis can be divided into five chapters as follows:Chapter One mainly introduces the theoires and methods used in this study. The object andthe significance of this research are also be presented in this chapter. Furthermore, this chaptermakes clear the range and the boundary of discourse markers. Besides, previous studies arereviewed in this part.Chapter Two analyzes the main components of “Bu shi wo shuo ni". Starting fromclarification of the concept and the range of negation, this chapter discusses the negativity of“bushi” in "Bu shi wo shuo ni,’ and the subjectivity of this negative expression. This chapternext explores the common characteristics of predicate verbs through the analysis and classificationof "X" in the construction ‘‘Bu shi wo X ni". In addition, the nature of "shuo" in "Bu shi wo shuoni" is investigated from multi-dimension in this chapter. Last, this chapter analyzes the personalpronouns from the aspects of the subjectivity and intersubjectivity, then explores their differenteffects on the choice of verbs.Chapter Three firstly judges the position of the discourse marker "Bu shi wo shuo ni" andthen explores its textual functions in discourse combining its syntactic context and usage patterns.Chapter Four attempts to reconstruct the evolutionary approach of ‘‘Bu shi wo shuo ni"according to the corpus of modern Chinese and the different uses of ‘‘Bu shi wo shuo ni,’. Thisdiscourse marker with a set pattern and special meanings can be regarded as the variation of theindependent and free-form "Bu shi wo shuo+S".Chapter Five is the conclusion and other discussions of this thesis. It summarizes the majorifndings and the limitations of this study. In addition, it puts forward suggestions for further study.
