A Survey Report On Employment Of The First MTI Graduates From Guangxi

With the rapid recovery of China’s economy after global financial crisis, China’s GDPjumped to the second place in the world in2011. China has played a more important role inthe world. With the continued development of China’s open economy, the demand oftranslation talents is increasing. The statistics of Haitian kaoyan website show the amount ofavailable translation talents can not meet the market requirement. In order to adapt to China’sreform and opening-up policy and the development of socialist modernization cause, we needfoster high lever and applied translation talents to promote the Chinese and foreign exchange,so we established the Master of Interpreting and Translation(MTI) major. MTI is becomingone of the most popular majors, since its enrollment in2007.MTI have great potential inemployment. Those outstanding graduates are easy to find a well-paid job. According toauthoritative survey, graduates of MTI often engage in simultaneous interpretation, conferenceinterpreting, foreign language training and teaching. Three universities of Guangxi startedenrolling students in2011. The first graduates graduated in2013. The author conducted aninvestigation to understand the employment situation and provide some ideas for MTI schooleducation and students employment.The questionnaire was designed and distributed via the internet, and the respondents werethe first MTI students selected from the three universities of Guangxi. Responses were elicitedfrom5aspects, i.e.1) The first MTI students achieved a100%employment rate;2) Most ofthem are not professional translators or interpreters;3) The reasons for choosing jobs mostlyare personal interests or family factors;4）The MTI students should combine theory withpractice;5) Respondents express their opinions about MTI science.
