Translation is a language activity that makes the source language expressed by the targetlanguage. It is not only the tie for the communication among people with different languages, but also the activity among different languages, different cultures and different societies. Withthe further development of China’s opens policy, economy and frequent cooperation with thewhole world, interpreting, mainly including liaison, simultaneous interpreting, consecutiveinterpreting and conference interpreting, plays a more important role in the understanding andcommunication of people from all over the world. In recent years, the film translation surges due to the spread of this type of culturalcommunication. The documentary Somewhere Between is selected as the target of theinterpretation practice in this paper. It is a present from the director to her adopted daughter,Ruby Goldstein Knowlton, who was born from China and is now seven years old. Thedirector aims to help her build the strong sense of identity. It tells a moving story of adoption, which reflects four Chinese girls’ growth in America and their journey of finding roots inChina. They even don’t know whether they are American or Chinese. This poses a challengeto the society on how to solve the problem of international adoption properly and how to helpthis special community build their sense of identity.Under the guidance of the interpretative theory, the interpreting of this paper is notlimited to the literal meaning, but aims to grasp the unity and coherence of the words. Thispaper uses some translating methods, such as addition, syntactic linearity and reinventingsentence structures to make the interpreting better. The paper aims at summarizing theinterpreting experiences, solving problems and enhancing interpreting capabilities.
