Abstract/Summary:
John Higham was an admirable American historian of the20thcentury whoespecially well-known for his study on the history of immigration and ethnic groups.Moreover, he also was an excellent critic in the discipline of American history sincethe second half of the20thcentury. Present dissertation focused on the two aspects: thehistory of immigrant and ethnic groups, and American historiography, with the aim toinvestigate the historical thinking and writing methods of Higham, which in order todemonstrate his unique characteristics and excellent achievements of historiography.Present dissertation consists of three sections, i.e. forward, main-text andepilogue. Main-text contains three chapters:Chapter one, beginning with the social and learning backgrounds of Higham,focused on investigating the effect of these both aspects to boost the formation of hishistorical idea. On the basis of that, to introduce Higham’s learning experience andthe development of his historical thought.Chapter two, focused on analyzing the thought of immigrant and ethnic grouphistory of Higham. Meanwhile, a deep discusses regarding the Nativism of Americanand Pluralistic Integration Theory.Chapter three, explored the research on American historiography of Higham,including evaluation of “conflict” and “consensus” of American history, discussion ofearly trend in the writing of American intellectual history, and description of theprofessional development of American historiography.
