| As an important member of the British Marxist historians and BritishCommunist Party Historians’ Group, John Saville is a pillar of that remarkableassembly of talent. He also is one of the initiator and participant of the British NewLeft Movement in the middle of the20th century. Saville was asked to remain in theUniversity of Hull to teach for a long time after he graduated from the Londonschool of economics, while he gave lectures in many countries. He made excellentand significant achievements in the field of British Marxist Historiography,especially in labour movement, labour history and social economic history and so on.In this dissertation, the author tried to comprehensively and systematically study theinternal structures and features of the historiography deeply due to the doublebackgrounds of international and Great Britain social reform as well as the growth ofthe British Marxist Historiography. Then the author wanted to tease his academicideas and achievements to elucidate the historical epistemology and methodology,and elaborate his academic standard and influence in the British MarxistHistoriography at last.There are five parts in this dissertation including the introduction, three chaptersand the conclusion.In the introduction, the author explained the situations of the external andinternal research on the John Saville historiography, then displayed the importanceof the research on the John Saville historiography, and showed the author’s purportsso that discussed what’s composed of the dissertation.In the first chapter, the author placed the John Saville’s historiography into thewhole European and the United Kingdom which mainly discussed the historiographydue to the background of the whole society and politics as well as culture in Europe,especially in the Great Britain in20th century and researched the John Savillehistoriography in all his life by studying Saville’ works. With these descriptive parts,the author explained that understanding the historiography is changeable course. Sothe author explained the circumstance which is benefit to analyze his historiographyprofoundly.In the second chapter, the author mainly discussed the Saville historiography. By means of survey of the academic achievements in social economic history, labourhistory, British labour movement and establishments of Journal to elucidate theinternal structures and features in Saville historiography.In the third chapter, the author mainly explained the influences of the Savillehistoriography in western history and international responses to his historiography.The author analyzed Saville’s historical practical activities to expound the influencein the British Marxist Historiography.In the conclusion, the author mainly explained the contributions of the Saville’shistoriography and displayed the role and function of his historiography. |
