Along with the performing art has been evolving and diversifying rapidlynowadays, cello performing art has reached a highest point ever. In China, the late steps taken earlier, but quickly moving to the front of this field. No more as the accompanyinstrument for the other, those distinguished cello masters like Yoyo Ma, Wang Jian, with their sophisticated skills, make this instrument heard on the stage.More pieces written for cello has grown in late history. Cellists had more expectation than it was in18-19th, therefore they developed curiosity of20th works of Kodaly Zoltan, Benjamin Britten, George Crumb and so on. Shostakovich(1906-1975) is the every one of them, as the river stone in Russian music. By establishing his own style, his art works identified the union of Soviet socialist principles of art. He was worshiped as the hero of soviet music, for his uniqueness of style, the use of tonalities. Some of his works are traditionally structured, and some edgy cutting.There aren’t many pieces Shostakovich composed for cello, but he had composed2pieces of cello concerto, and sonata for cello and piano in D minor which was composed in1934. The success of this sonata brought his reputation further.This article has three chapters. The first chapter analysis the background of composer, the structure of sonata, and the idea of this piece.The second chapter emphasizes on the characters of this piece, and hopefully providing some reference for other. And the third chapter talks about this skill and method of performing, and giving my own thoughts and interpretation.
