Ever since the end of the nineteenth century, music has gone through an earth-shaking change in composition techniques and styles. Within such a period, former Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich outstood others as the most prestigious and creative master. People, however, always think high of his symphony which wins a fantastic fame from all over the world and neglect his piano works.This paper attempts to excavate comprehensively the musical works of Shostakovich and the concept of this master's composition by studying his composition process, creative thoughts, background, and music style and characteristics. In addition, this paper provides a thorough analysis on one of his piano works "Second Piano Sonata" in terms of musical form, harmony, and techniques.This paper is divided into four sections. At the beginning, the composer's study and growing experiences, composition concept, music style, and music characteristics are introduced. In the following sections, his piano works are further explored by analyzing the works of "Second Piano Sonata" and comparing the playing techniques.
