This translation report is a comprehensive conclusion of the translation ofAssault on the Soul: Women in the Former Yugoslavia, compiled by Ellyn Kaschakand Sara Sharratt. The book mainly introduces the efforts made by female judges tolist rapes and atrocities committed against women as war crimes, with the aim ofprotecting women’s legal rights. Besides, it also introduces the phycological treatmentprovided by feminists and female therapists from all around the world to the woundedwomen in the former Yugoslavia. The primary mission of the book is to draw theattention of international society and justice system on the problems faced by women.The book characterizes by stong objectivity, lots of professional items, complex longsentences and historical facts, which requires the translator to make full preparationsbefore translating, including referring to relative books and internet to know the basicfacts and knowledge of law and phycology.Based on the translation and guided by the functional equivalence theory by Nida,this report analyzes the role of this theory in translation from the aspects of word,sentence and text, which deepens my understanding of functional equivalence theoryand improves my translation.This report consists of five chapters with the first chapter analyzing thebackground, significance and target of the translation project, and the preparationsmade before translating; the second chapter introducing the authors, text style,contents and translation difficulties of the book. The third chapter is about thedevelopment of functional equivalence theory. The fourth chapter is the main part ofthe report, analyzing the guiding role of functional equivalence theory in translationfrom the perspectives of word, sentence and text. The last chapter makes a conclusionof the lessons learned during the translation and what need to pay special attention to in the future translation.
