Insomnia has always been a big problem for people. Therefore, how to effectively treat insomnia has become one of the most priorities.By translating medical popular science books,Chinese translators can provide health knowledge to the public and promote the development of China’s health care.In this report, the author analyzed the translation of Navigating Sleeplessness(excerpted)based on functional equivalence theory with the aim of finding some translation methods and providing some references for the translation of related popular science books.Navigating Sleeplessness is a medical popular science book written by Lindsey Browning to introduce insomnia and give advices on how to reduce its symptoms. This report chooses Chapter 4 and 5 of this book as the source text, which contains a large number of nominal phrases, long and difficult sentences and so on.As it is difficult to precisely convey the original message to target readers for them to understand medical knowledge in fluent and natural expression, the author chooses functional equivalence theory according to the features of the source text to analyze the translation from the lexical and syntactic level to textual level. It is found that in the process of translation, lexical equivalence can be achieved through extension, negation and conversion;syntactic equivalence can be achieved through division, inversion, and repetition;textual equivalence can be achieved through combination, omission and addition. The findings of this report can hopefully provide some references for the introduction of related medical popular science texts and promote the development of China’s health care.
