Redundancy is a linguistic phenomenon that the linguistic form is more than itslinguistic content. Redundancy is one of the three major language natures. It is verycommon in languages and many people have done research about redundancy inlanguage field.The purpose of the dissertation is to help us to understand the vocabulary structureand be more flexible in use of language, to realize the inmost mechanism of languagedevelopment through the explanation of redundancy of disyllable words in modernChinese.The dissertation is divided into six chapters. Chapter one summarizes theachievements in the study of the redundancy of modern Chinese; Chapter twoillustrates the forms of redundancy in modern Chinese and divides it into two forms.Chapter three describes the natures of redundancy which are similarity, relativity andsystematicness. Chapter four analyzes the causes of redundancy in cognitive andother explanation. Cognitive linguistics is very illustrative in the explanation of thecause of redundancy. Chapter five illustrates the functions of redundancy in language.At last, we made a conclusion. It raises several issues of language redundancy forfurther exploration, especially the extension of the research area of languageredundancy: Firstly, the application of redundancy in translation field; secondly, theresearch extension in language level; thirdly, the further exploration in languageapplication field, such as teaching Chinese as a second language and English teaching;fourthly, the comparative study of redundancy in Chinese and other languages; andlastly, the tolerance analysis of language redundancy.
