Redundancy And Coping Strategies In English-Chinese Consecutive Interpretation

Redundancy as a characteristic of language is unavoidable in consecutive interpretation.Appropriate redundancy can promote communication but improper redundancy makes interpretation too tortuous to be clearly understood.This thesis studies the interview “How to Control Health Care Cost” held by Brookings Institutions on the mock conference held in May,2022.With case analysis method,the thesis analyzes the reasons behind improper redundancy and groups them into five categories.The redundancy in this case can be summarized into four types: meaningless expressions,redundant pronouns,unnecessary repetition and self-correction.The reasons to these problems can be categorized into five types,including listening comprehension barriers,low effectiveness of note-taking,unrefined Chinese expression,lack of background knowledge and psychological factors.Then,based on the reasons,the thesis provides solutions from five aspects,including seizing main information,effective note-taking,refining Chinese expressions,expanding background knowledge and building a positive mentality in interpretation.
