Practice Report On Court Interpreting

Since China’s entry into WTO, it has witnessed a sustained, sound and rapideconomic development, which attracts more and more foreigners doing business orliving in the country. Besides, thanks to China’s friendly policy towards Africa andGuangzhou’s economic status as the gateway of opening up, there are a large numberof African people coming to China, seeking business opportunity and better livingconditions. Therefore, the number of criminal cases related to foreigners increasesconsequently, which requires improvement of court interpreting in both quality andquantity. Nevertheless, due to the specialty, seriousness and complexity, many courtinterpreting practices turn out to be unsatisfactory if interpreters’ proficiency andunderstanding towards legal terms are insufficient.As an interpreter, the author finishes a series of consecutive interpreting work ininterrogations against African suspects of Guangdong Customs, and writes thispractice report. Firstly, the author briefly introduces the relevant preparation work,including data collection and glossary development, etc. Secondly, by analyzingtranscribed texts and comparing the original and the interpreting, the author aims tofind out insufficiency during the interpreting process, analyze the causes, and tries togive a solution. Besides, the author also gives a conclusion of how to use tactics tofacilitate the interpreting and make the interpreting output more satisfactory. What’smore, the features of African English are summarized based on the author’sexperience, which may hopefully benefit future interpreters.
