Abstract/Summary:
Big Breast and Wide Hips and Hundred Years of Solitude are the representative worksof Mo Yan and Marquez respectively, both are the won Nobel Prize for literature. BigBreast and Wide Hips uses a suffering mother’s life journey as links, delineating theconstant change of Chinese society throughout the20th century, highlighting personalsuffering feelings and the distortion of traditional culture and concept in the historicalchange. Hundred Years of Solitude uses the mysterious and bumpy experience of sevengenerations of Buendia family as well as the ups and downs of the Macondo town,revealing the communication difficulties encountered by Latin America culture and LatinAmerican people in the process of being colonized, as a result, falling into the state of“Hundred Years of Solitude”Since the creation of Mo Yan has been inspired and influenced by the works ofMarquez, many people think "Big Breast and Wide Hips" is the reproduction of “HundredYears of Solitude ". Based on the intensive reading of the works and referring to others’research results, this thesis aims to compare and analyze the interconnection anddifferences between the two works by using the method of parallel study. After analyzingthe artistic expression, the core characters as well as the thematic implication of the works,this thesis focuses that there are significant interconnection in magical realism color,family mother figure, the epitome of the national history and so on, embodying the depthof humanity, the extension of the ear, the thickness of history that exist in all classic works.However, as they are created under the background of different nations, different timesand the unique spirit activity of writers, Big Breast and Wide Hips and Hundred Years ofSolitude have their own distinct personality. The significant differences of them are asfollows: firstly, although they both have the magical color, they have different real lifeforms and the expression and source of magic are different; secondly, although they bothshape the three-dimensional and full image of family mother, they are not consistent withthe focus of the narrative, Big Breast and Wide Hips focuses on shaping the image of thesuffering mother while Hundred Years of Solitude focuses on revealing the fate of thefamily. Last but not least, although they both draw the fates of the nations, they havedifferent national cultural heritage. Big Breast and Wide Hips examines Confucian culturewhich emphasizes the differences in hierarchy while Hundred Years of Solitude shows theplight of communication of Latin culture. This thesis not only discusses and analyzes theinterconnection of the extrinsic dimension, but also extends the depth of thinking to thedimension of the intrinsic difference, aiming to get a comprehensive grasp and objectiveevaluation of the two works.As the classic works with their own national culture, the spirit of the times and thecharacteristics of the writers, both Big Breast and Wide Hips and Hundred Years ofSolitude state from the viewpoint of human, are concerned about changing individual fate,revealing the complex of human connotation, highlighting the predicament of real people, showing the common focus and multiple manifestating of Chinese and foreigncontemporary writers. By comparing the two, we can see that Big Breast and Wide Hipsand Hundred Years of Solitude through using the expression of magical realism, create aunique cultural connotation of the family mother image, and express the deep thinking ofthe fate of different nationalities.
