Christiane Nord, one of the second generation representatives of the Germanfunctionalism, put forward the theory of text analysis. Text analysis attempts to provide amodel of source text analysis, which can be applied to great majority types of texts andtranslation process. Under the guidance of text analysis, the translators seek the translationstrategies adopted in the translation of the texts. The introduction part gives a briefdescription of the source text about its contents and focuses on the necessity of textanalysis in adopting translation strategies. There are altogether four parts of the report.Part one analyzes the extratextual factors of the source text. The text consists of the firsttwo chapters of All Things Shining, the author is Hubert Dreyfus. The audience is one ofmy teacher who interested in philosophy, and she uses the book as an individual reading.Related extratextual factors include literature, philosophy factors. Part two analyzes theintratextual information of the source text, mainly including lexis, and sentence structure.A multitude of names, and literature appear in the text. There are a number of long andcompound sentences. Part three is the analysis and demonstration of the specifictranslation strategies in the translation process, including paraphrases, transliteration, etc.The guidance function of the Text Analysis theory in the translation of All Things Shiningis demonstrated by many specific examples. Part four is the conclusion part,together withsome limitations of this report and suggestions for further study.
